HOLY MOLY we have a potty trained 2.5 year old!
There's something about the second you hear that a child is 2 years old you automatically start thinking about potty training. I can not even begin to tell you how many times we "tried" to potty train and just completely failed until now!
Many friends told me that he might not be ready to and to not push it, but when a child can tell you what tv show they want to watch, list the abcs, count to 20, and wresting you during a diaper change....they ARE CAPABLE...ready? probably not, but who's ever ready for a big life change? I am so glad that a very talkative mom on the playground gave me her unsolicited advice when it came to potty training (LOL) because I would have never known about this book..
Don't get me wrong..I am not one of those parents that sit around and read parenting books and how to do this and that...I have NO time for that in my life and really enjoy just winging it sometimes. But, potty training was different. This book, doesn't really have ground shaking info in it that is going to potty train you kid over night. It does, however, have some info that will save you from losing your mind when you start potty training.
First off..let me tell what NOT to do..which is naturally, what we did.
DO NOT just bring a potty out one day and sit on the floor for your child to play with hoping that maybe they will just start using the potty on their own..THEY WONT..plus those small pottys are great when you are traveling but when you are training, you don't want to have to clean those constantly since they dont actually flush. Just get a potty seat and use the "big potty".
DO NOT think that you are going to potty train in one day. Seriously, I thought we'd be done and able to just move on from diapers. But, no..you can't..
DO NOT start potty training if you don't have a entire case of extra paper towel rolls. I'm not trying to be funny..you'll need so many paper towels for cleaning up all the accidents. I ran out of paper towels (and paiteints) with in the first hour of attempting.
Ok. So here's how it went...
I spent maybe an hour or so reading this book..specifically on the chapers of what to do and to expect. This is really what changed our whole attitude on potty training. By reading the pitfalls, frustrations, and challenges before we started potty training really helped me. Knowing this information in advance allowed me to identifying that what he was doing is normal and to be expected. That helped so much with my attitude towards everything.
We set aside a whole weekend to be home and just follow the book and to our shock and surprise it WORKED! Now, he still wears a pull up for naps and to sleep at night but he is fully trained with the exception of a few accidents here and there.
I highly recommend either purchasing or borrow this book from a friend if you are about start potty training.
Good luck you guys! Potty training is not for the weak! 😜 Stock up on your favorite cleaner, paper towels, and settle in for the weekend!
